Grand Velas Riviera Maya Review: A Luxury Family-Friendly All-Inclusive That Actually Delivers

Most “luxury” all inclusives in Cancun aren’t actually luxury.
On this trip, we intentionally split our stay between two resorts, a more budget conscious property I wanted to evaluate for clients, and the Grand Velas Riviera Maya.
Within 30 minutes of checking in, I had seen everything I needed to see and was already on the phone adjusting our plans to move here earlier than expected.
If you’re considering a luxury all inclusive in Cancun or the Riviera Maya, the Grand Velas Riviera Maya should be at the top of your list. After experiencing both sides of “luxury” on the same trip, the difference wasn’t subtle. It was immediate.
What makes this even more notable is that it’s fully family friendly.
There are plenty of adults only luxury resorts I recommend depending on the trip, but finding a property that delivers this level of service, atmosphere, and overall experience while still working seamlessly for families is far less common, which is exactly why this Grand Velas Riviera Maya review stands out.
A Completely Different Welcome
Before we even stepped out of the car, they knew our name.
There was no standing at a front desk, no waiting in line. Instead, we were invited to sit on a couch while everything was handled for us. Champagne appeared for the adults, and a hibiscus iced tea was served to the kids in proper glassware.
It was calm and seamless. The kind of arrival where you just know they’ve thought of everything.
When Service Becomes Personal

We arrived a day earlier than planned, which meant we had no dinner reservations, something that is typically booked 60 days prior to arrival at this resort.
After sharing that we had just come from a disappointing experience at another resort, where they messed up my daughter’s birthday dinner and did nothing to fix it, the team here stepped in immediately.
They secured a dinner reservation for that very first night. They coordinated with the restaurant to incorporate the candles I had brought. And when dessert came out, it felt like a real celebration. They sang, celebrated, and made her feel seen.
Right at check in, our concierge asked if we could keep her out of the room for a bit. When we returned, the space had been transformed, balloons arranged across both beds, including two large mylar number “1” balloons to make “11,” each set on top of small towers of regular balloons, plus an additional birthday balloon arrangement. He had even asked ahead of time if the color purple would be okay.
They made it feel like a real birthday celebration.
They handled it thoughtfully and went well beyond what I expected.
The Kind of Service You Don’t Have to Ask For
At this resort, every guest is assigned a dedicated concierge who communicates with you via WhatsApp.
It quickly became clear this is how they’re able to deliver that level of personalized, five star service.
Whether it was booking a massage I had to cancel at our previous resort when we left early, arranging time for my son in the golf simulator at the teen club, or helping us with an excursion we had already booked, everything went through one person who stayed on top of it.
When our first concierge was only there for a day, he personally added the next day’s concierge into our WhatsApp chat. She then came to find us at the pool the following day to introduce herself.
We were also able to add my husband and kids to the chat so they could reach out directly if they needed anything.
At lunch, I asked for ice. Our server asked if my prosecco was warm, and next thing I knew she was back with a chilled bottle of Ferrari prosecco, something that is normally an upcharge, and made sure the original bottle was chilled and ready for later.
We didn’t even have a room number yet, and they seated us for lunch without hesitation.
At one point, a boutique that didn’t officially open until 11:00 a.m. was quietly opened early so a guest could buy a bathing suit.
At the pool and beach, service was consistent and friendly, with a few standout team members who elevated the experience. By the second day, drink orders were remembered and names were used.
Two team members in particular, Luis and Emmanuel, stood out. Not because they were over the top, but because they were thoughtful, responsive, and never once made a request feel like an inconvenience.
They noticed things before we even had to ask.
When Something Goes Wrong
Even here, not everything went perfectly, and honestly this is where you really see the difference.
We had an excursion booked, and I was supposed to have vouchers for it. At check in, our concierge mentioned he would get those for us, but between making my daughter’s birthday special, helping with our dinner reservation, and answering the million other questions I had, it seems that detail got missed.
The morning of the excursion, I went over to the Ambassador lobby, but the excursion desk wasn’t open yet. I explained the situation to the concierge there, and with zero frustration or judgment, she immediately contacted someone and kept us updated on how long it would take for them to arrive and print the vouchers.
At the same time, our private transportation was running late.
Before it ever became an issue for us, they were already on top of it. When it became clear the car was stuck in traffic, they stepped in and arranged a taxi at their expense so we wouldn’t miss the excursion.
It wasn’t exactly what we had planned, we went from a private luxury van to a taxi, but we got there on time without having to think twice about it.
And when the excursion ended, our original transportation was there waiting for us, right on time, to take us back.
The Crowd

One of the first things you notice here is the crowd.
Guests here are well traveled, and it shows. You notice it right away, not just in what people are wearing, but in how they carry themselves.
At dinner, people are dressed well. Linen dresses, tailored pieces, designer sandals and handbags. Not flashy, just put together.
During the day and at lunch, it’s more relaxed, swimsuits and cover ups, but still put together. It never feels unpolished or out of sync with the overall atmosphere.
The tone is quieter and more refined. It never felt like a party crowd, and we didn’t experience the loud, disruptive behavior that’s common at many all inclusives. That same energy carries through to the pool, where the atmosphere stays relaxed, but still elevated.
Where We Stayed (and How the Resort Is Set Up)
We booked a two bedroom suite in the Zen section, which was the only option available last minute.
And honestly, I’m glad we did.
But one thing that’s important to understand about this resort, and something that isn’t always obvious when you’re booking, is that it’s really made up of three distinct sections, and each one feels completely different.
Zen Section
This is where we stayed. It’s set back slightly from the beach and feels more tucked into the jungle, with flowers, greenery, and even a small manicured creek running through the property.
It feels quieter and more spread out. All of the rooms at this resort are suites, so space is never an issue. We booked a two bedroom family suite, which worked especially well for us.
The pool here reflects that same energy, quieter and more relaxed, more about slowing down than activities.
Even though it’s not directly on the beach, getting around was incredibly easy. There are vans constantly running between sections, and we never waited more than a minute, even during spring break.
Ambassador Section
This is the main family friendly area and where you’ll find the most activity.
The pool is larger, there are games, volleyball, and a swim up bar that works for both kids and adults. This is where things feel the most active during the day, and where most families naturally spend their time.
This is also where we found ourselves going back to the most.
Grand Class Section
This is the adults only area and has a completely different feel.
It’s quieter, more low key, and has some of the best oceanfront views on the property. The pool and beach here feel more relaxed and a little more removed from the energy of the other sections.
If you’re traveling without kids and want something more relaxed, this is where you want to be.
All three sections share the same level of service, dining, and overall quality, but the experience you have here can feel very different depending on where you stay.
Room Comfort Notes
One thing worth noting, and the only consistent issue we experienced, was with the water temperature in both the shower and bath.
The water never got fully hot, it was lukewarm at best. After a full day at the pool or beach, a truly hot shower would have been much more enjoyable and relaxing, and instead it fell a bit short. The same was true for the jetted tub. At a resort without hot tubs, it would have been nice to unwind in a hot bath in the evenings, but that wasn’t really an option.
We did mention it to our concierge, who shared that the standard temperature for showers and baths should reach around 107°F. That was not our experience. They offered to have maintenance take a look, and it did seem slightly improved the following day, but the issue quickly returned. Even when it was “better,” the water only reached a mildly warm temperature, and that was with it turned fully to hot.
Out of curiosity, I checked with a few other guests, and they were experiencing the same issue and had also contacted maintenance about it.
The Beach and Pool Experience
The beach here is a little different than what some people expect, and it’s worth understanding ahead of time.
The sand itself is beautiful, and the beach is very well maintained. There are plenty of loungers, and service carries all the way down to the water, just like it does at the pool.
Seaweed can be an issue throughout Cancun and the Riviera Maya, especially this time of year, but here it’s managed constantly. There were multiple staff members out throughout the day raking and clearing the beach, especially during swimming hours, and it made a noticeable difference.
One thing you’ll hear mentioned in reviews is the presence of rocks in the water. They are fairly close to the shoreline, but they’re intentionally placed to help break the surf.
Because of that, the water closer to shore is calmer and easier to swim in, especially compared to other areas where the waves can be much stronger.
It’s not the wide, completely open stretch of beach you might find in Cancun, but it feels more swimmable and controlled.
For us, it worked really well.
The pool experience, especially in the Ambassador section, is where we spent most of our time.
The main pool is very large and thoughtfully designed, with three distinct sections. The largest sits closest to the beach and includes the swim up bar, along with plenty of space to spread out. There are smaller seating areas along the edges, which made it easy to feel a bit tucked away even in a shared space.
There’s also a tanning ledge, a volleyball setup, and enough open space that kids could play catch or move around without feeling like they were in the way of others.
The middle section is slightly smaller and more shallow, and the third section is a dedicated kids pool, which is noticeably warmer and more comfortable for younger children. The main pool itself felt quite cool, though once you’re in, it’s refreshing.
What stood out most was that even with spring break crowds, it never actually felt crowded in the water. The layout allows for movement and space in a way that many resorts don’t.
The overall energy is a bit more active here, but still very controlled. There is light music throughout the day, and it only becomes louder during organized activities like water aerobics. It never feels like a party environment.
Service at the pool was consistent and friendly, though not overly frequent. There were times it took a while for a server to come by, but if we didn’t feel like waiting, walking up to the bar was quick and easy.
Luis and Emmanuel stood out in particular. They were attentive, responsive, and made sure we always had what we needed without it ever feeling intrusive. By the second day, drink orders were remembered and names were used, which added a more personal touch.
Food service at the pool was noticeably slow. It often took an hour or more for food to arrive. That said, there is an easy workaround, the Azul buffet is right there, and you can grab a to go plate if you don’t want to wait.
Each day, an ice cream cart makes its way around the pool. It’s a fun touch for families, though timing matters, by the time it reached us, options were often limited.
Another small but helpful detail, the resort allows inflatables, and even with larger ones in the water, it never felt disruptive. There’s also a shop in the Ambassador section where you can purchase pool toys, inflatables, goggles, and other beach essentials.
At both the pool and beach, the overall energy strikes a balance that’s hard to find, relaxed, family friendly, and still elevated.
Pool Chairs
Like most resorts during spring break, chairs can be competitive.
We tipped our pool attendant in cash early on, and he reserved chairs for us each morning. We still needed to be there by around 8am, but having that consistency made a big difference.
He did mention they’re technically not supposed to hold chairs past a certain time, but in practice, it worked really well.
This becomes more noticeable as the day progresses. We saw a number of chairs reserved but not actively being used. While the stated policy is that belongings will be removed after an hour, we saw that enforced inconsistently.
Guests arriving later in the day, especially after excursions or late check ins, may have a harder time finding chairs. It’s something to be aware of, and honestly one area where many resorts could improve by better managing or assigning seating.
That said, even when chairs were limited, the pool itself never felt overcrowded.
Dining
The dining here leans toward a more cuisine driven approach.
Menus include more complex ingredients and presentation than what many people expect from an all inclusive. That can make it slightly harder for kids to choose at times, but there are always simple options available, pasta, chicken, and other basics.
The quality is solid.
And this is where it’s important to set expectations.
Compared to most all inclusive resorts, the food here is very good. It’s elevated, thoughtfully presented, and a noticeable step up from what many travelers are used to.
But for more discerning travelers, especially those who regularly dine at top restaurants in major cities, the food may not feel exceptional. It’s good, consistently good, but not necessarily memorable.
The beachfront buffet is more about setting than cuisine, live music, ocean views, and presentation elevate the experience, even if the food itself is more average than standout.
The frozen drinks were a bit hit or miss, many leaned more icy than flavorful. The margaritas were strong, though a little heavier on alcohol than I prefer. That said, when I asked for a Hugo spritz, which many places don’t know, they made it perfectly.
The included wines were solid, especially the sparkling, white, and rosé. The wine selection overall leans less familiar for U.S. travelers, with fewer recognizable labels than many may expect. The reds, however, were more of a miss overall, and not just for me.
While tipping is optional, it’s worth noting that you’re presented with a bill at the end of each meal to sign, even though there’s no charge. It does provide an easy way to add gratuity to your room, but it can also feel a bit forced. In our experience, service didn’t feel tied to tipping, likely because we rarely had the same server twice.
The Spa
The spa itself is beautiful and very much aligned with the overall feel of the resort.
That said, the hydrotherapy experience is more guided than independent. Rather than moving through the space at your own pace, you’re led through each part of the water ritual in a set sequence. I went through it alongside three other guests, which made it feel less personal than I had expected.
The experience moves from one space to the next in short, timed intervals, starting with a sauna, followed by a cold room, steam room, and exfoliation room. From there, you’re guided through a warm and cold water walk, typically two to three passes, before entering the pool area, which includes water spouts for your neck and back, along with both a hot and cold plunge.
I also tried the sound massage. Going into it, I was expecting more of a sound bath combined with massage. In practice, it felt more like a traditional treatment with sound elements incorporated, rather than a fully immersive sound experience, which may have simply been a difference in expectations.
Evenings & Nightlife
Evenings at the resort offer a mix of live shows, dining experiences, and more low key nightlife options.
There are nightly shows, but we found the timing often conflicted with dinner reservations. Unless you plan to do dinner on the beach alongside the show, it can be difficult to experience both. A later showtime would have made this feel more accessible.
The karaoke bar is advertised as transitioning to adults only at 9pm, but in practice, it continued to feel very family oriented well past that time, with kids still participating into the evening.
There is also a nightclub located in the Zen section that stays open late, until around 2am. That said, during our stay, we never saw it being used, though we also tend to turn in early, usually by around 10pm.
Overall, the evenings lean more relaxed than high energy, which will appeal to some travelers, but those looking for a more vibrant nightlife scene may find it limited.
Family Experience - Where This Resort Stands Out
The kids club is beautifully designed and clearly intentional, offering younger children a space that feels engaging rather than just a place to drop them off. Evening movies, in particular, were a standout and something families can genuinely look forward to.
There is also a smaller kids club located in the Zen section. It felt more tucked away and quieter, though during our stay, I didn’t see it being used.
The teens club, however, is where this resort really differentiates itself.
This is not an afterthought, it’s a fully built out space. Video game pods, arcade style games, pool tables, foosball, basketball, snacks and drinks, and even a dedicated movie theater with full reclining seats.
Even my own kids, who are typically past this stage, were drawn to it.
The space is family friendly until 9pm, after which it transitions to a teens only environment for ages 13 to 19. We did see staff actively try to enforce that transition, though like anywhere, not every guest followed it.
There are a few operational details that could be refined. The teen mocktail bar was also never open during our stay, despite being told it would open around 3pm. It would also be helpful to have a clearly posted schedule of what movies are playing and when, especially given how great the theater space is.
There is also a small kids spa, which feels better suited for younger children. For teens, it would be great to see a more robust spa offering that aligns with the rest of the resort experience.
Another detail worth noting is the karaoke bar, which is advertised as family friendly from 7 to 9pm. In practice, it still felt very family oriented even after that time, with kids continuing to participate past 9pm, so it’s unclear if or when it transitions to a more adult environment.
What makes this stand out even more is that it truly works for families without compromising the overall experience.
There are absolutely adults only luxury properties I recommend depending on the trip, but for travelers looking to bring their children and maintain a high end experience, this is one of the few places that genuinely delivers both.
Investment
For those considering this property, pricing typically starts around $1,400 per night for two guests, depending on season and availability.
Rates increase for larger suites and during peak travel periods, particularly for families needing additional space.
This is not a budget all inclusive, but for the level of service, accommodations, and overall experience, it delivers strong value for the right traveler.
Plan It Right
If you’re considering this resort, how you book it matters.
From selecting the right section of the property to timing dining and spa reservations, there are a number of details that can significantly impact your overall experience, many of which aren’t obvious when booking on your own.
When you book through me, you’ll also receive additional preferred partner benefits through my affiliation with Virtuoso, including:
Upgrade on arrival, subject to availability
$100 resort credit to use during your stay
Early check-in and late check-out, when available
Beyond that, I personally communicate with the resort in advance to ensure my clients are recognized and set up for the best possible experience from the moment they arrive.
At this level, small details can make a meaningful difference in your stay.
If this is a trip you’re considering, I’d be happy to help you plan it in a way that truly maximizes the experience.

If you’re looking for a truly luxury, family friendly all inclusive in Cancun or the Riviera Maya, this is one of the very few I recommend, and it stands out among them.
